A humorous love story, adapted for young people by Albert Cullum, that uses Shakespeare's original language to tell of mischievous fairies casting chaotic love spells in an enchanted forest.
In the days leading up to the marriage of the Duke of Athens and the Queen of the Amazons, a magic spell, which was ordered by the king of the fairies to be placed over his estranged queen, goes awry and four young Athenians, also placed under the spell, fall in love with the wrong people. Jealousy and rage ensue. Meanwhile, a group of workmen plot to gain entry to the wedding feast by concocting and rehearsing a play while pretending to be actors who are to entertain the guests. The performance of the play does not get the reception they anticipated. The misadventures created by the king's jester while casting and removing the spells convince everyone that they have been dreaming, thus the title of the play.
